First year students put their knowledge of science to the test!
Scifest is a national STEM fair program for second level students, encouraging a love of STEM and inquiry based learning. This year, Scifest@TullowCS took place on the 7th of December. 140 first year students exhibited 46 innovative scientific projects with subjects ranging from ‘Ecosystem in a jar’ to ‘Speed difference’ to ‘The effects of eating bread mould’. On the day students also attended a talk on Biodiversity given by a visiting ecologist Eileen Canny and took part in a ‘Guts of Digestion’ workshop provided by Lismore Heritage Centre.
Judges were very impressed by the standard of entries and praised both project design and how each project was presented with knowledge and enthusiasm. The decision was not easy for the judges but, in the end there could only be one winner. Well done to Cian Gorman-Comerford, Liam Gavin and Will Baird who with their project ‘Shoes- SLow or Speedy’ scooped first prize. Runners up were Emma McGrath, Mya Cosgrove and Molly Tierney with their project investigating the oil content in foundation make up. A third prize was given to Francine Cillian for being the best communicator on the day.
